I’ve been following Jonathan Yabut since the apprentice asia days. Been hooked to that specific season and since then followed his career after apprentice asia. A little background of Jonathan Yabut, prior to Apprentice Asia, he was with GXS as Brand Manager, graduated from UP Diliman with a degree in economics. Below are some learnings I got from following Jonathan Yabut.
1. Always be prepared
One thing I would never forget Jonathan would share on his experience in apprentice asia was drinking energy drink/bar. During the Apprentice Asia, they would need to wake up early and what we see on tv is only half the battle. There was no time to spare, so Jonathan would always bring an energy drink/bar to consume in between breaks. Another thing Jonathan brought with him was his own iron steamer. Instead of wasting time taking turns for the iron steamer, Jonathan would get his shirts ready asap and take a rest during the free time.
*trivia: before entering Apprentice Asia, he watched all 158 episode of the Apprentice series
2. GRIT
You would always hear this from Jonathan, so how do you define “GRIT”? As Jonathan would explain it “I’d always advise people to find their grit whenever they feel uninspired — to keep on moving. Grit is passion and perseverance combined that fuels someone to achieve his long-term goals, despite the hardships he will face along the way.”
3. Make fast decisions
One thing that Jonathan observed from succesful leaders is fast decision making. Steve Jobs would say that he is not always the smartest in the room but what makes him succesful is when he is surrounded by people who can provide the right information, make use all of them and decide fast. Jonathan would rather regret the things that he have done compare to the things he haven’t done at all.
4. Train your people
Whenever you hire millenials don’t hesitate to give them the power to success. This means leadership trainings, development programs, don’t wait for them to reach 40 or 35, because by the time they are ready to get that position it’s. Start them young, don’t be afraid to loosen up. It’s always going to be a chicken or egg problem, if you don’t give it to them now you’re going to have the same reason to continue failing because you weren’t give that opportunity
5. Develop your strengths not your weakness
Keep on developing your strengths, there is no point of correcting your weaknesses as you get older. The older you get there is a lesser chance for you to correct those things because that exactly is who you are and what makes you a perfect person. Rather focus on your strengths because there is high probability that, that strength will overcome whatever weakness you have.
