Summer left without saying goodbye, leaving Pinoys in the rain. But don’t sulk and instead bring out your raincoats and rain boots and prepare your wet-weather gear, which should include applications that may come in handy during this season.
We scoured the app stores for software that are worth downloading and came up with four that didn’t force-close on us:
Yahoo! Weather app1) Yahoo! Weather (iOS: Free)
This app gives you your daily weather report, but with location-based Flickr integration; local and global weather predictions; interactive radar, heat, satellite, and wind maps; and sunrise and sunset times.
Yahoo! Weather was recognized as one of the most innovative apps at this year’s WWDC [Worldwide Developers Conference] Apple Design Awards and won over reviewers like TechCrunch mobile editor Greg Kumparak, who has this to say about the app:
“Weather data? Neat. But what’s particularly amazing here is the design of the app itself. It’s a million impressive little things. It’s the blurring of the background as you dive into the grittier details; it’s the subtle parallax scroll when flipping between cities; it’s the way the cute lil’ windmills spin faster or slower based on the actual current wind speed of the city.”
Project Noah app2) Project NOAH (iOS/Android: Free)
Call it the Swiss Army knife of weather tools, combining multiple approaches to somehow understand and subsequently second-guess the weather’s behavior. Access information such as probability of rain, typhoon forecast, and rainfall amount straight from your phone. You also get photos from multifunctional transport satellites and Doppler stations.
In case you didn’t know, Project NOAH [Nationwide Operational Assessment of Hazards] was launched by the Department of Science and Technology in response to President Noynoy Aquino’s instruction to develop a program for disaster prevention and mitigation.

InstaPatrol app3) InstaPatrol (iOS/Android: Free)
It’s the Instagram equivalent of a homegrown, crowdsourced, location-based app for relevant info such as an accident along EDSA, a pothole near Eastwood City, a fire in Makati City, or flooding in Ortigas. InstaPatrol allows you to share posts on Facebook and Twitter and comment on other users’ updates. It even lets you send posts directly to relevant government agencies and media outfits.
This empowers app users to be the eyes of their communities, especially in times of weather disturbances. It also has the potential of being an indispensable photo-sharing and semi-social networking service,

MMDA app4) MMDA (iOS/Android/BlackBerry/Windows Phone: Free)
The go-to road companion for smartphone users in Metro Manila.
The MMDA app is handy for viewing traffic conditions along major roads in the metro. Its rise to must-have status is perhaps a testimony to the weekday crawl which has become part of our daily commute. It also serves another purpose: warning you of bogged-down vehicles and flooded roads.
